Food Allergies & Special Diets

Allergies, intolerances and special diets are an increasingly important consideration when ordering cakes. Approximately half our cake orders include some dietary requirement!

You can order Dairy Free, Gluten Free and Nut Free cakes online. Eggless, Vegan and Diabetic options should be ordered by phone.

There are three ways to order for yourself/guests with special diet or allergy needs:

  • Order the whole cake to meet your dietary needs and so minimise any risks of cross contamination when the cake is dismantled, cut and served.
  • Order (for example) a gluten free tier as part of the main cake (use the “Special Requirements/Allergy Information” text box found on the checkout page during ordering).
NB If you/your guest cannot tolerate even traces of a particular food, then you are safest to order all parts of your cake to be free from the particular ingredient, to avoid possible contamination when the cake is dismantled and served.
  • Order a separate, labelled box of allergy free cupcakes or gift-boxed cake or extra portion cake, for yourself or guests with particular requirements, using the “extra portion cakes section”.

We understand that the last thing you want, on your wedding day, is to worry about allergies, either for yourself, or any guests, so if you need to order an allergy free cake, please read the general advice section below and also the section relating to your particular needs.

General Advice

Even if you don’t think it’s a particular issue for your chosen cake, it is extremely important that you make us aware of any dietary issues that may affect how we make your cake.
  • Please tell us if you/your guests have a food related allergy, so that we can ensure your cake meets these needs. This is done in the “Special Requirements/Allergy Information” text box, for the main cake, or in the “extra portion cakes” section if you are ordering a separate gift cake/ cupcake gift box or extra portion cake for those with special dietary needs.
  • When you have placed your order, please also check your order confirmation to ensure that your allergy/dietary needs are noted.
  • Since allergies/special diets affect everyone differently, once your order has been processed, we will also want to speak to you or your guest by phone to make sure we fully understand your needs, so please call us at least one month before your wedding if you have not heard from us.PLEASE ENSURE THAT WE HAVE FULL CONTACT DETAILS
  • If you discover food issues after you have ordered, please call us as soon as possible and (as long as your cake hasn’t been baked!) we can update your order.

What We Do:

We are very careful about the ingredients that enter our kitchens. All our ingredients are selected and stored carefully so we can control what goes into our cakes; our suppliers certify the ingredients and handling of items which may contain allergens. If you want to discuss particular details with us, please call us to do so.

We are also careful about food handling, we bake and store allergy/special diet cakes separately.

If you order a special diet or allergy cake (extra portions, cupcakes or gift cake) from the “Extra Portion Cakes” section. It is immediately placed in a separate box ready for delivery or collection.

Vegetarian

All of our cakes are baked using ingredients that are suitable for vegetarians who eat dairy and eggs. We usually avoid other animal products such as gelatine, sometimes found in food colourings. However, please ensure you read the Vegan, Egg-free, and/or Dairy free sections, if these are part of your requirements.

If you are ordering a cake with cheeses or cheesecake elements, please call us to ensure selected cheeses are vegetarian.

Gluten & Wheat Free

We are happy to make gluten and wheat free cakes. This can be whole cakes, cupcakes or particular tiers.

When ordering your cake, simply put (for example) “top tier gluten free” in the “Comments” box, this does not affect your opportunity to select flavours as normal.

NB. There is a small risk of cross contamination with other tiers when the cake is dismantled and cut by your venue. Should this be a problem, we recommend that you purchase a gift-box of gluten free cupcakes or a separate gift cake for you or your guest. These can be found in the “Extra Portion Cakes” section.

Dairy Free

Most of our cakes can be made dairy free: in blind tastings, our testers could not identify the difference, so it is usually acceptable to use for a whole cake if you wish. However, as we make many cakes, please remember to add “dairy free” in the comments text box, so that we do not bake/ice your cake in the kitchen at the same time as any other cake that may contain dairy.

Caramel Cappuccino Cake contains dairy products in the caramel.

All chocolate, cream and dessert cakes may contain dairy (please call us to check as we use several suppliers and ingredients vary).

Stacked cheeses cakes contain dairy products.

NB: If you wish to order part of your cake to contain dairy, you cannot assume that the rest of the cake is dairy free, as cross contamination may occur when the cake is dismantled and cut or being served.

In this situation, we recommend that you purchase a gift-box of dairy free cupcakes or a separate boxed gift cake for you or your guest. These can be found in the “Extra Portion Cakes” section.

Nut Free

Due to the increasing number of nut allergy sufferers, we are often asked to produce peanut free and/or nut free cakes. We now make nut/peanut free cakes every week. As a result, we use nut free ingredients as standard for most of our cakes.

However, we do require you to tell us if your cake needs to be free from nuts or peanuts, as we do sometimes use nut ingredients (e.g. for Christmas or wedding fruitcakes) and we will ensure that the cakes are baked, stored and decorated separately.

If ordering by phone/email, please ensure your order confirmation contains the correct allergy information.

Online, please remember to add “nut free” in the personalising my cake text box, so that we do not bake/ice your cake in the kitchen at the same time as any other cake that may contain nuts.

All chocolate and dessert cakes may contain nuts (please call us to check as we use several suppliers and ingredients vary).

NB: All our fruit cakes contain nuts and are covered with almond paste. If you wish to order a fruit cake tier as part of your wedding cake, you cannot assume that the rest of the cake is nut free, as cross contamination may occur when the cake is dismantled and cut or being served.

If you wish to order nut free cake and a fruitcake, we recommend that you purchase a gift-box of nut free cupcakes or a separate boxed gift cake for you or your guest. These can be found in the “Extra Portion Cakes” section.

Egg Free/Eggless

We are happy to make eggless sponge cakes, but would suggest that arrangements for this should be made by phone. The absence of eggs from cakes does affect the “strength” of the cakes and thus our ability to stack cakes on top of one another, but many designs can be adapted.

Egg white is also an essential ingredient of royal icing, which is used in some designs for piping dots, patterns, inscriptions etc.

All dessert cakes may contain eggs (please call us to check as we use several suppliers and ingredients vary).

Lemon, Orange, Chocolate-Orange and Coconut & Lime cakes can be ordered, but fillings will be adapted to avoid eggs.

Our egg free cakes do contain dairy products, so if you wish to avoid this, please order “vegan” cakes.

Vegan

Diabetic Cakes

It is not our practice to offer cakes for diabetics online, as neither cake nor icing is naturally diabetic friendly. We also understand that diabetes is a complex condition and the same ingredients affect different people in dissimilar ways. We are always happy to try and assist you, but will need to discuss your needs of those of your guests on the phone, so please call us.
